YouTube has made a bold statement at its annual Brandcast upfront event, declaring itself not just a streaming platform, but the new television. YouTube CEO Neal Mohan emphasized the platform's evolution, stating, “Welcome to the YouTube era.”
Top Creators Choose YouTube
The event, hosted by Trevor Noah, highlighted a roster of creators who have shifted from traditional TV to YouTube. Noah, known for his work on The Daily Show and the Grammys, underscored YouTube’s diverse offerings: “These days, everything is on YouTube, everything. Sports, entertainment, interviews, podcasts, you name it.”
YouTube announced a new slate of creator-driven shows, introducing what chief business officer Mary Ellon Coe described as “an exclusive opportunity with a select group of entertainment creators.” This includes shows from Trevor Noah, Alex Cooper, and Jesser among others, solidifying YouTube as the chosen platform for cutting-edge content.
New Show Announcements
Jesser will launch Pros vs. YouTubers, Quen Blackwell presents Feeding Starving Celebrities 2.0, and Dude Perfect introduces Squad Games. Alex Cooper revealed an entire slate for her Unwell Network, including Before the Steps, Pot Stirrer, and Holiday Hard Launch. “Legacy media spent decades deciding who we should watch,” Cooper told the audience, emphasizing YouTube's direct engagement with viewers.
Kareem Rahma announced his new show Keep the Meter Running, and audiences also look forward to Trevor Noah’s World Tour and Dwyane Wade's new season of Fly on the Wall. Soccer star Erling Haaland is planning a World Cup docuseries and a competition series called Erling’s Gauntlet.
Tech Innovations and Creator Loyalty
YouTube's presentation included tech enhancements like Google Pay integration for easy purchases, multimodal video creation tools, and an affiliate boost program. However, the key message was confidence in its role as the platform of choice for both consumers and creators. The evening concluded with a performance by Chappell Roan, a testament to YouTube’s role in nurturing talent before mainstream fame.
As legacy media struggles to keep pace, YouTube's message is clear: the future of TV is already here, and it’s on YouTube.
