Apple Original Films has unveiled the first trailer for 'Matchbox', an action-packed movie featuring John Cena, based on Mattel's famed toy cars.
Plot Details
Under the direction of Sam Hargrave, 'Matchbox' adapts the die-cast car line into a thrilling narrative. The story follows a group of childhood friends who unite to avert a global catastrophe while rekindling their bonds, according to the official synopsis.
John Cena plays Sean Walker, a super agent and car enthusiast. The trailer depicts Sean reuniting with old friends at a bar, only to find themselves feeling dizzy. He warns, “Everybody listen, we’re all gonna wake up someplace different.” Soon, they are aboard a cargo jet where Sean is questioned about a nuclear warhead while tied up.
Cast and Crew
Joining Cena are Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris, and Randeep Hooda. The script is written by David Coggeshall, known for 'The Family Plan' and 'Orphan: First Kill'.
Skydance Media's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger, along with Mattel Films' Robbie Brenner, serve as producers.
Mattel's Cinematic Ventures
Variety first reported on the 'Matchbox' film development in 2022. Robbie Brenner of Mattel Films expressed the brand's lasting impact, stating, “For nearly 70 years, Matchbox has carried enormous cultural relevance and inspired generations of kids to unleash their imaginations.”
'Matchbox' follows the footsteps of 'Barbie', another Mattel brand adapted for the big screen. Other Mattel projects in the works include films based on Hot Wheels, American Girl, Barney, Polly Pocket, Thomas and Friends, and Uno.
