Director's Vision
Atkins, known for his debut 'Lace Crater', shared insights with Variety about his creative process. He revealed the film began as a poetic document that evolved into a screenplay. 'I had about 40 drafts and actors attached, but progress was slow,' Atkins said. 'I started writing poetry, which became the framework for the movie.'
Atkins expressed a desire to explore unconventional storytelling, stating, 'I’m most attracted to cinema that reminds you the medium is young. I aim to evoke sensations or moods inaccessible in other art forms.' He likened his approach to an Edward Hopper quote, suggesting some ideas are better expressed visually.
Reflecting Modern Alienation
Atkins believes 'Sour Minnows' captures post-pandemic alienation, where friends become strangers and reality diverges. 'There’s something about modernity permeating the movie,' he explained. He allowed his creative instincts to shape the narrative, avoiding traditional structures.
Audience Reception
Atkins enjoys seeing the world attempt to articulate the film's essence, finding the varied interpretations 'fun'. 'It’s exciting to see how people describe the movie,' he said. 'I’m happy to read what people think and discuss their feedback.'
