Marvel has confirmed that David Jonsson will play T’Challa’s son in 'Black Panther 3,' set for release on December 15, 2028. This announcement came during Marvel's Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con.
Secret Meeting with Ryan Coogler
Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios' president, revealed how Jonsson was cast in the role. He told Empire that Jonsson met with director Ryan Coogler in a secret meeting. Coogler, who directed the first two 'Black Panther' films, identified Jonsson as the perfect actor to take on the mantle.
Feige stated, “We hadn’t started a search yet. Ryan was working on 'Sinners,' and the plan was to discuss the casting after its release and the Academy campaign.”
However, Coogler made an unexpected call to Feige, saying, “I found him. He’s this guy, David Jonsson.” After a clandestine meeting, Coogler confirmed his choice, telling Feige, “He’s the guy, I felt it in my soul.”
Continuation of the Legacy
The new film will see original cast members Leticia Wright and Winston Duke return. The storyline will focus on Prince T’Challa II's coming-of-age journey as he steps into the role of the Black Panther.
The casting of Jonsson follows the legacy left by Chadwick Boseman, who originally played T’Challa. Boseman tragically passed away from colon cancer in 2020 at the age of 43. Leticia Wright took over as Black Panther in the 2022 film 'Wakanda Forever.'
Impact of the Original 'Black Panther'
The first 'Black Panther' film, released in 2018, was a significant cultural and commercial success. It grossed $1.3 billion worldwide and received seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.
