Yeon Sang-ho's latest zombie thriller, Colony, has secured distribution deals in over 120 international territories, announced Korean studio Showbox ahead of the film's world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this Friday.

Global Reach for 'Colony'

The action thriller, which marks Yeon's return to the zombie genre after his 2016 hit Train to Busan, will be distributed by Well Go USA in North America, StudioCanal in the U.K., Gaga Corporation in Japan, ARP Sélection in France, and Plaion Pictures in Germany and Italy. Showbox has also closed deals for Australia and New Zealand (K-Movie Entertainment UK), Latin America (BF Distribution), Scandinavia (Mis Label), Spain (Energia), the CIS and Baltics (The World Pictures), Poland (Media4Fun), Turkey (Mars), Hong Kong (Edko Films), Taiwan (MovieCloud), Indonesia (PT Primacinema Multimedia), the Philippines (Pioneer Films), India (Multivision Multimedia), Thailand (Sahamongkolfilm International), Mongolia (Izagur Media), and broader Southeast Asia (Purple Plan).

Cannes Premiere and Cast

Colony is set to screen in the Cannes Midnight Screenings section on May 15, marking a return to the festival for Yeon, whose Train to Busan also premiered in the same section. The film stars Gianna Jun as Se-jeong, a biotechnology professor caught in chaos when a mutating virus is released at an industry conference. The ensemble cast includes Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-been, Kim Shin-rock, and Go Soo. Yeon and the principal cast are expected on the red carpet for the premiere.

Production and Creative Team

The screenplay, co-written by Yeon and frequent collaborator Choi Gyu-seok, is produced by Wowpoint and Smilegate with Showbox presenting. The production budget is reported at $12 million, substantial for a Korean genre film. Yeon's career trajectory includes animated works like The King of Pigs and The Fake, the animated companion film Seoul Station, and the live-action sequel Peninsula. His Netflix series Hellbound achieved global success in 2021.

Release Plans

Colony will debut in South Korea on May 21, with Well Go USA planning a late-August theatrical release in North America.
