StudioCanal has acquired international sales rights for Guillermo del Toro's acclaimed film Pan’s Labyrinth, coinciding with its return to the Cannes Film Festival after its original 2006 premiere.
Celebrating a Cinematic Milestone
The 20th anniversary of Pan’s Labyrinth sees it coming back to the Cannes Film Festival, where it first captivated audiences. The film was del Toro’s first to receive Academy Award nominations, earning six nods including Best Original Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film.
It went on to win three Oscars for Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, and Best Makeup Design. The film also garnered over 100 international awards, including three BAFTAs and seven Goyas.
Cannes Classics and Restoration
The newly restored version of Pan’s Labyrinth, presented by Cineverse, is set to premiere in the Cannes Classics selection at the Debussy Theatre. Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro will be present at the screening.
“After our successful collaboration on The Devil’s Backbone, I am honored and delighted to continue working with my friends at StudioCanal on the international sales and distribution of the 20th anniversary of Pan’s Labyrinth,” said del Toro. “The care and attention StudioCanal devotes to the support of legacy cinema, as experienced in theatres and physical media, is a gift to anyone who appreciates the art of film.”
Global Distribution Plans
The distribution deal was negotiated by Falko Jahn, vice president of editorialisation & development library, with del Toro’s company Necropia expanding its catalogue. Mexican exhibitor Cinépolis will lead the theatrical distribution in Mexico and across Latin America for the film's re-release.
StudioCanal intends to release the new 4K restoration later this year, with plans for a series of theatrical re-releases in key territories such as Germany, the U.K., France, Benelux, and Australia this fall.
