The first Dogma 25 film, Mr. Nawashi, directed by Isabella Eklöf, has commenced production, with Netflix acquiring streaming rights for the Nordic region.
Dogma 25 Movement
Inspired by the Dogma 95 cinema approach of Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, Dogma 25 was launched by emerging Danish directors, including Eklöf, at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025. Their goal is to create films without modern artistic interference, adhering to a strict “vow of chastity” with ten dogmas aimed at preserving artistic integrity. These include using original, handwritten scripts, shooting in real-world locations, and avoiding internet usage during the creative process.
About 'Mr. Nawashi'
Mr. Nawashi is a BDSM love story featuring newcomer Tanya Holm Andersen as Katarina, an ambitious singer who explores the world of BDSM with the mysterious Mr. Nawashi, played by Esben Smed. The plot follows Katarina's journey from flirtation to obsession and dependence. The film is set for a 2027 theatrical release.
Eklöf's Track Record
Eklöf’s debut feature Holiday premiered at Sundance in 2018, and her 2023 drama Kalak won the Special Jury Prize at San Sebastian. She has directed episodes for HBO’s Industry and Sky Atlantic's The Death of Bunny Munroe, and co-wrote Ali Abbasi’s Oscar-nominated Border (2018).
Production and Distribution
Financing for the Dogma 25 projects comes from a collaboration between Zentropa, DR, and Nordisk Film Distribution, which will handle local releases. Mr. Nawashi has additional support from the Danish and Swedish Film Institutes. TrustNordisk manages international sales for the Dogma 25 slate.
