Truecaller Criticizes India's Anti-Spam Framework

Truecaller CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala has publicly taken issue with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) rules on caller ID apps, arguing they hinder consumer protection in its largest market.

Dispute Over Number Series Restrictions

Jhunjhunwala accused TRAI of blocking Truecaller from showing spam reports for calls from India's 1400 and 1600 number series. These numbers are designated for commercial communications: 1400 for telemarketing and 1600 for service-related calls.

TRAI's framework, launched in 2024, aimed to help consumers identify legitimate business calls and reduce spam. Despite these intentions, Jhunjhunwala claims it has backfired, with Truecaller data showing 81% of calls from the 1400 series and 79% from the 1600 series being ignored by users in the last eight months.

Impact on Consumer Trust

Truecaller reports that users have blocked 74 million calls from these series, and daily blocks on 1600-series numbers have tripled since October 2025. With TRAI preventing these numbers from being marked as spam, Truecaller introduced a “Frequently Blocked” badge for numbers blocked by multiple users.

TRAI Seeks More Authority

The Economic Times disclosed TRAI's intention to gain powers under India's Information Technology Act to act against caller ID apps like Truecaller, Hiya, and Whoscall for tagging 1400 and 1600 series numbers as spam. TRAI and India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology have yet to comment.

Truecaller's Continued Commitment

Amidst regulatory and competitive pressures, Truecaller remains committed to India, housing over 350 million of its 500 million monthly active users. Jhunjhunwala emphasized the need for an evidence-based approach and stated Truecaller would cooperate with the Indian IT ministry by sharing relevant data.

“Penalize the bad actors, not the ones like Truecaller that make a significant positive impact,” Jhunjhunwala urged.
