Google has announced significant updates for Android Auto at the I/O conference, which include adapting to unconventional screen shapes, introducing video streaming via YouTube, widget support, and expanded AI capabilities.
Adapting to New Screen Shapes
Patrick Brady, Google's VP of Android Automotive, highlighted the new flexibility of Android Auto to fit various screen geometries found in modern vehicles. The update addresses displays such as Lucid Air’s curved screen and MINI Cooper’s circular one. Brady explained, "The new 'full bleed' design allows applications like Google Maps to fill the entire display regardless of geometry."
Enhanced Entertainment Options
Later this year, Android Auto will support YouTube video streaming, which functions only when the vehicle is parked. The feature supports 4K video at 60 frames per second and Dolby Atmos spatial audio. Video streaming will rely on the user’s phone, activating when the car is in park. Brady noted the demand from users wishing to watch videos while their vehicles are stationary.
AI and Design Innovations
Android Auto will implement the Material Three Expressive design language, introducing vibrant colors and animations. The update also includes widget support, allowing users to project widgets for sports scores, smart home controls, and more. Google's AI assistant, Gemini, can interact with these widgets using natural language.
Gemini’s new "Magic Cue" feature analyzes messages to suggest helpful replies, aiming to reduce distractions while driving. Brady stated, "We test the heck out of everything," ensuring driver safety through extensive simulator tests.
Integration and Navigation Upgrades
Google Maps' "Immersive Navigation" feature will enhance Android Auto with refreshed colors and detailed 3D visuals. Brady emphasized the ongoing integration between phone projection and embedded systems, with Google Maps now capable of coordinating with EV powertrains for optimized routes.
While some vehicle controls remain inaccessible via Android Auto, advancements are narrowing the gap between projection and embedded software. Brady commented on the blending of phone and car capabilities, highlighting the collaborative work with automakers.
Despite limitations in controlling certain car systems, Google continues to enhance Android Auto's functionality, bridging the gap between phone projection and native Android Automotive systems.
