Google has announced significant updates to Android 17, showcasing new features at its dedicated Android Show ahead of the I/O developer conference. The updates include AI enhancements, a revamp of the emoji set, and new security measures.
All-new Emoji
Android’s emoji set of over 4,000 icons has been redesigned to include more depth and detail. These updates will first roll out to Pixel phones later this year.
Pause Point
Pause Point is Google's latest digital well-being feature aimed at curbing app distractions. Once marked as 'distracting,' apps trigger a 10-second delay before opening, encouraging users to reconsider their choices and offering alternatives like breathing exercises.
Screen Reactions
Screen Reactions allows users to record simultaneous video from their selfie camera and their screen. This feature targets content creators, enabling easy creation of reaction videos. Launching first on Pixel devices in the summer.
Even More AirDrop
Google is expanding Quick Share’s compatibility with Apple AirDrop, with support extending to Xiaomi, Honor, and OnePlus phones. Additionally, Quick Share can generate QR codes for file sharing with iPhones.
AI Innovations
Under the 'Gemini Intelligence' brand, Google introduces AI features like Rambler, a transcription tool that refines speech input by removing filler words and correcting errors. Rambler and AI-generated widgets, allowing custom widget creation via natural language, are set to launch this summer on Samsung Galaxy and Pixel phones.
Enhanced Security Features
Android 17 introduces new security improvements, including collaboration with banks to block spoofed calls and enhanced malware detection. Users can enable biometric protection remotely if their device is marked as lost.
The updates to Android 17 underline Google's commitment to improving user experience and security through innovative features and AI advancements.
