NBC News is expanding its business coverage with the launch of 'Business in America', a new initiative aimed at exploring corporate influence on everyday life through interviews with top executives from companies like Nike and Zillow.
New Direction for NBC News
Under the leadership of Cesar Conde, chairman of NBCUniversal News Group, NBC News is shifting its focus to more in-depth business coverage. Conde stated, 'We are at such a unique moment in time. The pace of change right now that we are seeing in the marketplace affects technology retail, healthcare. There is a real appetite among our audience and consumers to understand what’s happening and what it means.'
Separation from CNBC
This initiative follows NBC News's split from CNBC, which was recently spun off into a new entity called Versant. NBC News is developing its own unique approach to business coverage, separate from CNBC’s traditional market-focused content.
Key Interviews and Segments
Christine Romans, a veteran finance reporter, has been appointed as chief business correspondent and will lead a new two-hour program on NBC News Now. Additionally, NBC News has partnered with former Wall Street Journal journalist Joanna Stern to contribute tech sector reporting.
The first segment featured Craig Melvin interviewing Nike CEO Elliott Hill on 'Today'. Upcoming interviews include Romans with Zillow CEO Jeremy Wacksman on May 15, and Jenna Bush Hager with Barnes & Noble CEO James Daunt on May 19. These segments will appear across NBC News platforms including NBC News Now and the subscription app.
Focus on Common Ground
NBC News’s research indicates a public desire for information that transcends partisan divides. Conde noted, 'We spent a lot of time over the last year listening to our audiences and what is on their minds. The first thing that popped up for us was how many similarities Americans have.' This insight led to the creation of 'Common Ground', a series that fosters dialogue between leaders with differing viewpoints, which has informed the development of 'Business in America'.
Other NBC News anchors and correspondents will contribute to this series as it evolves.
