Sony Unveils Redesigned Xperia 1 VIII

Sony's Xperia 1 VIII marks a significant departure from its predecessors, introducing a new square camera island and enhanced telephoto capabilities. The design shift breaks away from the vertical camera alignment seen since 2020, opting for a square block with three lenses, flash, and a Sony logo, akin to recent Motorola Edge designs but distinctly angular in Sony style.

Design and Features

The Xperia 1 VIII offers four color options: black, silver, red, and an exclusive gold available online. The design includes a textured camera island, frosted glass back, and knurled aluminum edges. The device retains a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microSD slot, and boasts IP65/68 resistance ratings, though surpassed by newer IP68/69 models.

Enhanced Camera Capabilities

The redesign accommodates a larger 1/1.56-inch-type sensor for the telephoto lens, significantly larger than the Xperia 1 VII's. Comparable to Vivo X300 Ultra and Xiaomi 17 Ultra, it offers a 48-megapixel resolution and a fast f/2.8 aperture. However, Sony sacrificed continuous optical zoom to fit the sensor. The camera system includes updated RAW multi-frame processing, improved bokeh, and macro shooting with autofocus.

AI Camera Assistant

Adding to the camera's capabilities, Sony introduces an AI camera assistant suggesting filters, framing, and lens use, enhancing photos pre-capture. Users can disable it if preferred. This feature surpasses Google's Pixel 10 AI Camera Coach, which requires manual activation.

Additional Upgrades

The Xperia 1 VIII includes stage stereo speakers tuned with Sony Pictures and Music, a 5,000mAh battery with 30W charging, and the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. Available in two configurations: 12GB RAM/256GB storage and 16GB RAM/1TB storage, priced at £1,399/€1,499 and £1,849/€1,999 respectively. Despite these upgrades, the phone offers limited software support with four years of OS updates and six of security patches. Currently, it's available in Europe and Asia; a North American release is not planned.
