Unitree, renowned in the humanoid robot sector, has unveiled the GD01, a giant mech suit priced at $650,000, claiming it as the world's first production-ready manned mecha.
Features and Demonstration
The Chinese robotics company doesn't clearly state the GD01's intended use, but a YouTube introductory video offers some insights. The GD01 can knock down walls of cinderblocks and switch between a bipedal stance, similar to the Power Loader from Aliens, and a quadrupedal mode resembling a mechanical horse.
According to the video description, "It can transform. It’s a civilian vehicle. It weighs ~500kg with you inside. Please everyone be sure to use the robot in a friendly and safe manner."
Operational Details
Unitree CEO Wang Xingxing is seen climbing into the GD01’s cockpit, which features a racing-style chair surrounded by a roll-cage. However, it appears that the "passenger" is likely a dummy used for testing. The operation of the mech remains unclear, as it is shown performing tasks without a person inside.
The GD01's transformation ability is limited. The seating position remains static, meaning any passenger would either be looking skyward or need to manually adjust the seat when switching modes.
Market Position and Warnings
Despite initial skepticism, as confirmed by Wired, the GD01 is not a prank. Unitree is serious about the product, as evidenced by their warnings against making dangerous modifications or using the robot hazardously. Unitree is known for viral videos of its humanoid G1 robots performing martial arts, backflips, playing tennis, and other activities, but the GD01 marks a significant shift towards more ambitious projects.
While the GD01's market and practical applications are still to be determined, the hefty price tag of $650,000 suggests it is aimed at a niche audience looking for cutting-edge robotic technology.
