Amazon's head of devices and services, Panos Panay, addressed speculation regarding the company's potential smartphone plans, stating that while a new phone is "not necessarily" in the works, he did not dismiss the idea entirely.
Not Denying, Not Confirming
In an interview with the Financial Times, Panay was asked directly about Amazon's interest in developing a smartphone. He responded, "It's just not the goal," acknowledging the widespread rumors. "A lot of people want me to say no, but a lot of people want me to say yes, I get it. Here's my take: it's not necessarily [that] we're going after a phone, no," he elaborated.
Panay emphasized the complexity of the question, suggesting that a simple "no" might be misleading. "If I black and white say no, I would say that was accurate. But I also think it's misleading," he noted.
Exploring New Form Factors
The discussion about Amazon's smartphone ambitions comes amid reports of a project codenamed "Transformer," an Alexa-enabled AI phone. Panay hinted that the nature of smartphones is evolving, stating that the form factor is "not going anywhere," but is "going through some transformation, and will continue to do so over the next 10 years." This suggests that any potential Amazon device might not fit traditional smartphone definitions.
"There's a whole new set of form factors that we're working on," Panay mentioned, pointing to the possibility of AI wearables and other innovations falling under Amazon's exploratory umbrella.
Lessons from the Past
The context of Amazon's previous experience with the Fire Phone and Panay's involvement with Microsoft's Surface Duo is significant. Both products were met with challenges in the competitive smartphone market. These past experiences appear to inform Amazon's cautious approach to re-entering the smartphone arena.
With the Transformer project reportedly considering both smartphone and "dumbphone" designs, it's clear that Amazon's exploration into mobile technology is far from conventional. Alexa Plus AI is expected to play a central role in whatever device emerges, aligning with Amazon's broader strategy to expand its AI capabilities.
As the company evaluates its next steps, Panay's comments suggest that Amazon remains open to innovation while proceeding thoughtfully in the dynamic tech landscape.
