Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the launch of Incognito Chat, a new AI product that guarantees complete privacy by not storing conversation logs on servers.
Meta's Unique Approach
According to Meta, Incognito Chat stands out due to its use of end-to-end encryption, a feature recently removed from Instagram DMs. Zuckerberg stated, "Other apps have introduced incognito-style modes, but they can still see the questions coming in and the answers going out. Incognito Chat with Meta AI is truly private, meaning no one — not even Meta — can read your conversations."
Privacy Comparisons
In comparison, Google retains data from temporary chats in Gemini for up to 72 hours. ChatGPT conversations can be stored for up to 30 days, while Claude's incognito chats are kept for a minimum of 30 days. Anthropic and OpenAI have yet to respond to inquiries about their data retention policies.
Recent legal actions have highlighted the importance of chat privacy. ChatGPT logs are central to lawsuits related to mass shootings in Tumbler Ridge, Canada, and Florida State University. A lawsuit from the New York Times led to a court order requiring OpenAI to store conversations indefinitely. Similarly, Google faces legal challenges over Gemini's alleged role in wrongful death.
Private Processing Technology
Meta's Incognito Chat uses the Private Processing technology introduced last year for WhatsApp. This technology processes data without storing it, ensuring user privacy. The new feature will be rolled out in WhatsApp and the Meta AI app over the coming months.
