Sarah Arnold's debut feature film, Too Many Beasts (L’Espèce Explosive), explores a conflict between farmers and a hunting club in rural France. Premiering at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, this dark comedy-drama highlights Arnold's storytelling prowess, co-written with Jérémie Dubois, Olivier Seror, Romain Winkler, and Mehdi Ben Attia.

Film's Intriguing Premise

The film stars Alexis Manenti as Fulda, a sharp but heartbroken cop, and Ella Rumpf as Stéphane, a troubled psychologist. Vincent Dedienne also stars. The plot revolves around wild boars ravaging crops, instigating a clash between farmers and a hunting club that feeds game between hunts. Brun, a bankrupt farmer, faces off against the club's president, leading to a dramatic turn of events.

Character Dynamics

A year after a pivotal incident, Fulda and Stéphane investigate the aftermath, uncovering unexpected revelations and developing a complex relationship. The film's narrative weaves personal and societal conflicts, reflecting Arnold's interest in blending cinema with political themes.

Cinematic Craft

Noé Bach handles cinematography, while Isabelle Manquillet edits the film. Playtime is in charge of sales. Arnold's past short films, such as Leçon de ténèbres and Totems, have garnered critical acclaim, establishing her as a director to watch.

Director’s Vision

Arnold draws inspiration from her upbringing, influenced by her mother’s political activism and her father’s adventurous spirit. She expresses her affinity for rebellious characters, stating, “The characters in my films resist, and if I feel sympathy for them, it’s because they all believe that, even when the odds are stacked against you, the fight is worth having.”

An exclusive clip from Too Many Beasts, available ahead of its May 17 premiere, teases the film's intense dynamics and character interactions. With its compelling storyline and rich character development, this film promises to be a highlight at Cannes.
