Skyline Media, a sales agent based in Vietnam, is presenting a five-title slate at the Cannes Film Market, spotlighting 'The Scourge', one of the first films adapted from a Vietnamese video game.
'The Scourge' Leads the Lineup
The original game for 'The Scourge' topped China's Steam Early Access chart with over 60,000 downloads and a 94% positive rating, amassing millions of YouTube views. The movie centers on an estranged young man in a cursed Saigon apartment block from the 1990s. He discovers his possessed mother and must unravel a malevolent force linked to forbidden rituals and family secrets. Producers Charlie Nguyen and Jimmy Pham Nghiem, known for 'The Rebel' and 'Clash', lead the project.
Expanding into Horror and Animation
Also on the slate is 'The 10th House', produced by ProductionQ, recognized for 'Vietnamese Horror Story' and 'The Soul Reaper'. Directed by Tran Huu Tan and Hoang Quan, the film involves a young man's investigation into supernatural events connected to a forbidden ritual following his father's mysterious death.
The animated feature 'Scotty' involves over 300 artists and has been in production for six years. This English-language film follows a street cat on a journey home, featuring voices from Penelope Rawlins, William Hope, and others.
International Co-Productions and Series
'Chrysalis', a U.S.-Vietnam co-production, will have a market screening. The film is based on Sir Daniel K. Winn's memoir and features actress Kieu Chinh. Set in 1970s Saigon, it follows a Vietnamese-American artist confronting past traumas.
Also featured is 'Blue Season', a U.K. crime thriller directed by Zen Nguyen, with a BAFTA-winning composer and a cast that includes Catherine Nguyen Dauphin and Earl Wan.
Strategic Global Reach
Hang Trinh, CEO of Skyline Media, emphasizes the significance of 'The Scourge' as a step forward for Vietnamese cinema and indicates the slate's reflection of Skyline's expansion into international collaborations. Skyline distributes over 800 foreign films and represents more than 150 Vietnamese and Southeast Asian titles, reaching over 50 countries with more than 130 partnerships.
