Foreign Concept Entertainment is developing 'The Ideal Man,' a thriller focused on Jim Thompson, the former CIA operative who founded one of Thailand's most famous lifestyle brands before disappearing mysteriously in 1967.

Set Against Vietnam War Backdrop

The screenplay is set during the Vietnam War, centering on Thompson's disappearance at the peak of the conflict and the various suspects involved. Principal photography is scheduled to start in Bangkok by mid-2027, with a director yet to be finalized. The project is currently being marketed to potential buyers at the Cannes Film Market.

Screenplay and Production Team

Dorothy Kozak Snoke, represented by Zero Gravity, is writing the screenplay. Snoke adapts the script from Joshua Kurlantzick's biography, 'The Ideal Man: The Tragedy of Jim Thompson and the American Way of War.' Snoke and Michael Belyea are producing. Belyea, an independent producer based in Los Angeles and Vancouver, has a history with UTA, 20th Century Fox, and Sony Pictures and focuses on international storytelling. Foreign Concept Entertainment specializes in local stories for a global audience.

Executive Producers and Filming

Dylan Tarason and Michael Rifkin are executive producers. Tarason's credits include 'Hell or High Water' and the upcoming Hulu and PCCW Media Hong Kong thriller series 'The Season.' Rifkin, former co-head of Sony Pictures International Productions, emphasizes the story's potential for global appeal. Bangkok-based Living Films, known for FX's 'Alien: Earth,' will provide on-location production services in Thailand.

Joshua Kurlantzick’s book brilliantly lays out the intense geopolitics of Cold War Southeast Asia, then layers in one extraordinary protagonist and shows how the clash between U.S. ideals and reality played out directly in Jim Thompson’s life,” said Belyea.

In Association with Thai Silk Company

The film is developed in collaboration with the Jim Thompson Thai Silk Company, which Thompson founded in 1951 to revitalize traditional Thai silk production. Now a lifestyle brand spanning textiles, fashion, home furnishings, hospitality, retail, and art, it recently celebrated its 75th anniversary and was featured in Season 3 of 'The White Lotus.' Thompson's former Bangkok residence remains a popular tourist destination.

'The Jim Thompson story is an incredible combination of passion, intrigue, patriotism, and unsolved true crime. His disappearance is an enduring mystery that fascinates countless amateur sleuths to this day and begs to be brought to the big screen with A-list talent,' said Rifkin.

Tarason remarked on the story's potential, noting its longstanding intrigue for visitors to Thailand and its capacity as a thriller and unsolved mystery to engage a global audience.
