Googlebooks: Google's New AI-Driven Laptops

Google unveiled Googlebooks on Tuesday, a new series of laptops integrating Gemini, Google's flagship AI models, in collaboration with partners such as Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo.

Magic Pointer: A Smart Cursor

Scheduled for a fall launch, Googlebooks are the first laptops meticulously designed around Gemini, promising personal and proactive assistance. They feature the 'Magic Pointer', an AI-enhanced cursor that delivers intelligent suggestions based on screen content. For instance, it allows users to set up meetings by pointing at a date or visualize two images together, like a living room and a new couch.

'We thought, we can take Gemini Intelligence and make the pointer truly smart and intelligent,' Alexander Kuscher, Google's Senior Director of Android Tablets and Laptops, explained.

Seamless Android Integration

Googlebooks offer seamless integration with Android phones, enabling users to run phone apps directly from their laptops. Tasks like completing a Duolingo lesson can now be done without reaching for a phone. Additionally, files from phones can be accessed directly through Googlebook’s file browser, enhancing productivity and convenience.

Custom Widgets and Dashboards

Googlebooks introduce 'Create your Widget', allowing users to customize widgets by prompting Gemini. This feature can aggregate web information and connect with Google apps like Gmail and Calendar to create personalized dashboards. For instance, it can assist in planning a family reunion by collating flight, hotel details, and adding a countdown.

Beyond Chromebooks

Googlebooks represent a significant shift from Google's previous Chromebook lineup, introduced 15 years ago. A Google spokesperson mentioned ongoing support for existing Chromebook users while hinting at a transition to the new system. This shift also marks a move from ChromeOS to an Android-based operating system, aligning with the industry’s AI integration trend, and positioning itself against Microsoft’s AI-native Copilot+ PCs.
