SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers from “New York,” the fifth episode of “The Vampire Lestat,” now streaming on AMC+.
Lex Wood, the costume designer behind “The Vampire Lestat,” infused the third season of AMC+'s hit series with vibrant colors to capture the chaotic spirit of Lestat de Lioncourt, portrayed by Sam Reid.
Color and Musical Influence
Wood, who joined the show at the end of Season 2, embraced a shift from typical vampire hues of red and black, aiming to reflect Lestat's rockstar persona. “Lestat is a musician,” Wood told Variety. “Everything is through the lens of the music.” Inspired by artists like Iggy Pop, David Bowie, and Freddie Mercury, Wood crafted an individualistic look for Lestat and his band.
Design Process and Fabric Choices
Much of the design work was adaptive, evolving with the script. Wood noted that 75% of the costumes were handcrafted, with a focus on historical accuracy in fabric, especially for characters like Lestat and his mother Gabriella, played by Jennifer Ehle. “There are a couple of Easter eggs in terms of the use of those fabrics,” Wood hinted.
Character Evolution Through Wardrobe
Louis de Pointe du Lac, played by Jacob Anderson, sees his wardrobe evolve post-Armand, reflecting newfound freedom and wealth. However, budget constraints limited the opulence they could achieve. “He’s a very tricky character to achieve, because in theory, he is incredibly rich,” Wood explained.
New Characters and Symbolism
New character Regina, played by Delainey Hayles, introduces emotional layers to the storyline. Her waitress uniform nods to Claudia’s past and stands out visually. Regina’s impersonation of Claudia is subtly hinted through wardrobe choices, maintaining continuity with the narrative.
Jewelry serves as symbolic elements for both Lestat and Louis. Lestat’s accessories toy with perceptions, while Louis’ pieces reflect his past actions. “We wanted Louis to have a bit of silver, a bit of bling,” Wood revealed.
Gabriella’s androgynous style and Armand’s (Assad Zaman) gradual sartorial transformation underscore their narrative arcs. Wood uses fabrics and tailoring to explore gender fluidity for Gabriella, while Armand’s shift from deception to authenticity is mirrored in softer, earth-toned clothing.
Despite his recent vampire transformation, Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian) remains emotionally grounded. Wood ensured his wardrobe reflected his unchanged financial status and carefree attitude.
Season 3's tour bus setting doesn’t limit Lestat’s wardrobe. Wood imagines an extra bus dedicated to Lestat's expansive collection, highlighting the character’s flamboyant lifestyle.
