Bruce Springsteen, during his PBS special "Bruce Springsteen: Finding America in Song," emphasized that true patriotism involves acknowledging America's flaws and urging improvement.
Springsteen Defines Patriotism
Springsteen stated, "I believe in critical patriotism. I believe that’s the definition of a patriot, you know, that you love your country so much that you are willing to look at it clearly, recognize its faults, encourage it to be a better place, and believe that you carry in your heart the country that is waiting."
Political Outspokenness
Throughout the Trump era, Springsteen has been one of the most politically outspoken artists. His recent "Land of the Hope and Dreams" tour included protest songs and criticisms of the White House. At the tour's late March opener, Springsteen targeted Trump and former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, remarking, "She prosecutes our president’s perceived enemies, covers up for his misdeeds and protects his powerful friends." He added about Trump, "You want to talk about snowflakes? We have a president who can’t handle the truth."
Trump's Retaliation
President Trump has also been vocal against Springsteen, recently calling for a MAGA boycott of Springsteen's music and concerts via Truth Social. Trump described Springsteen as a "bad, and very boring singer," and accused him of having "Trump Derangement Syndrome." He called Springsteen "a total loser who spews hate against a President who won a Landslide Election."
