Corlys Challenges Rhaenyra Over Sons' Legitimacy

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for Season 3, Episode 3 of “House of the Dragon,” now streaming on HBO Max.

Corlys Velaryon's Bold Accusation

In a shocking turn on the latest episode of “House of the Dragon,” Corlys Velaryon, played by Steve Toussaint, publicly accused Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen's sons of being bastards. This declaration took place in the halls of the Red Keep, challenging Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) to her face.

Corlys had long accepted Rhaenyra’s three eldest boys as his grandsons, despite persistent rumors about Rhaenyra's affair with Ser Harwin Strong (Ryan Corr). However, tensions erupted when Rhaenyra refused to recognize Corlys's own illegitimate sons, Addam (Clinton Liberty) and Alyn (Abubakar Salim), as legitimate Velaryons.

Inside Corlys's Mindset

Steve Toussaint, in an interview with Variety, explained Corlys's state of mind during the confrontation. “He’s completely at the end of his tether,” Toussaint said. Corlys's defiance was evident as he loudly proclaimed the truth to Rhaenyra, daring her to deny the widely suspected rumors.

“I dare you to prove me wrong, because the world has suspected this anyway,” Toussaint commented on Corlys's mentality during the pivotal scene.

The Stakes in King's Landing

Corlys's accusation against the now-deceased Jacaerys (Harry Collett), Lucerys (Elliot Grihault), and Rhaenyra’s remaining heir, Joffrey (Oscar Eskinazi), could have dire consequences. Rhaenyra's response to this bold claim remains to be seen, potentially altering the power dynamics within the kingdom.

Toussaint recounted a scrapped scene from Season 1, where Corlys faced near-death in battle. This scene highlighted Corlys's acceptance of mortality, suggesting a deeper motivation for his actions. According to Toussaint, Corlys is driven by a desire to secure his family’s future, even if it means risking his own life.

Rhaenys's Influence and Corlys's Motivation

Corlys's decision to protect Addam and Alyn ties back to a poignant moment with his late wife, Rhaenys. Her insistence that he acknowledge the boys' existence influenced his actions. “It’s almost liberating to live with that idea that I don’t fear death,” Toussaint reflected, describing Corlys's mindset.

Despite his love for Rhaenyra's children, Corlys's loyalty was tested. “I really believe he did actually love those children,” Toussaint said. Yet, Corlys’s frustration boiled over when Rhaenyra refused to legitimize Addam and Alyn.

The unfolding drama in “House of the Dragon” continues to captivate audiences, with Corlys's fate hanging in the balance following his daring proclamation.
