Threads Tests Meta AI for Enhanced User Interaction

Threads is currently testing a Meta AI integration providing real-time context and recommendations, akin to X's Grok, in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Argentina, and Singapore.

Enhanced Interaction on Threads

The new feature allows users with public accounts to mention Meta AI in posts or replies to receive more context on various topics. Meta confirmed to TechCrunch that this function aims to assist users in accessing real-time information about trends and breaking stories within conversations.

By asking questions like, “why are people talking about the World Cup this month?” or “how are the Knicks doing in the playoffs?” users can engage with Meta AI, which will respond publicly through the @meta.ai account. Responses are generated in the language of the original post.

Positioning Threads as an Information Hub

This integration positions Threads as a platform not only for discussing news and trends but also for obtaining information and recommendations without leaving the app. The concept mirrors Grok's role on X, where users often query the AI chatbot for clarifications.

However, there are inherent risks with AI chatbots, as seen with Grok generating controversial content. Meta AI claims to have stronger safeguards, though its effectiveness remains to be observed.

User Control Over AI Interactions

Meta provides options for users who prefer fewer AI interactions. Users can mute @meta.ai, mark posts as “Not interested,” or hide Meta AI replies on their posts.

Meta is gathering feedback and plans to refine the feature before expanding its availability.
