Dessn, a design startup, has raised $6 million in a funding round led by Connect Ventures, with additional investments from Betaworks and N49P, to develop its production-focused design tool.

Innovative Design Technology

Founded by Gabriella Hachem and Nim Cheema, Dessn offers technology that allows startups to run their codebases in the cloud without setup costs, abstracting away local dependencies. This facilitates easier design handoffs to developers, according to the company.

Cheema emphasized the significance of their approach, stating, “When we started the company two years ago, our whole thesis was [that] the code is going to get commoditized — and in a world where code is insanely cheap, you just get a lot more software, and then design becomes a way that’s a differentiator.”

Adoption and Integration

Current customers include Color, Wispr, and Mercury. Dessn’s infrastructure supports various back-end architectures without requiring developer intervention, offering flexibility with low setup costs. This allows companies to gradually adopt Dessn without abandoning existing tools.

Hachem noted, “The one thing that’s great about Dessn is that we don’t create switching costs. It’s not like you have to drop all of Figma now, and you have to come to Dessn for everything.”

Future Integrations

Though Dessn currently lacks integrations, plans include connecting with Slack for prototype creation and meeting notetaker Granola for design insights. However, the startup intentionally avoids Figma integration to maintain focus on production environments.

Pricing and Market Position

Dessn allows free compilation of one repository and five prompts weekly, with subscriptions starting at $39 per user per month, offering additional prompts and features. Jordan Crook of Betaworks commented, “Dessn is the only product that has perfect fidelity within the code base/production, rather than trying to design and turn it into code.”

Currently operating with a team of four, Dessn plans to expand modestly. The startup is aligned with the current trend of AI-driven design tools, distinguishing itself by focusing on real-time production environments.
