Instagram announced on Wednesday the global rollout of 'Instants', a new feature allowing users to share disappearing photos, marking a shift towards authentic, ephemeral content.
Feature Details
The 'Instants' feature permits users to share photos that disappear after 24 hours, viewable only once by Close Friends or mutual followers. This format prohibits edits and uploads from the camera roll, aiming to capture real-life, unfiltered moments.
Users can capture an Instant by tapping a mini photo stack icon in the Instagram inbox. Recipients can react with emojis, reply, and send an Instant back. Notably, screenshots or recordings of Instants are not allowed.
Testing and Availability
Meta, Instagram's parent company, has been testing 'Instants' as a standalone app in regions like Spain and Italy. This move expands Instagram's focus beyond polished content to quick, authentic snapshots.
User Controls and Interaction
Users have control over their Instants, with options to undo accidental shares and delete from archives if unopened. Instants are stored privately for up to a year, allowing for recap compilations to be posted on Instagram Stories.
For those uninterested in receiving Instants, users can pause them by swiping right or block and mute specific senders.
Market Position
While Instagram aims to reclaim its roots in casual photo sharing, the platform faces competition from existing features like Instagram Stories and lessening interest in apps like BeReal. The success of Instants in this competitive landscape remains to be seen.
