Anthropic Targets Small Business with AI Tools

Anthropic has launched Claude for Small Business, a new suite of services designed for smaller companies, such as local hardware stores or coffee shops, rather than large corporations like Walmart and Starbucks. This move was announced by the company on Wednesday.

AI Adoption Beyond Large Enterprises

Traditionally, AI adoption has been most intensive at the enterprise level. Studies indicate that large companies with expansive budgets have primarily scaled AI systems beyond pilot integration. However, this trend is shifting as small and midsized businesses increasingly adopt AI technologies.

Features Aimed at Small Businesses

Anthropic's new bundle of features is designed to serve these new AI users. Available through a toggle in Claude Cowork, Anthropic’s task-automation platform, the services offer automated bookkeeping, business insights, and generative ad campaign tools. The suite also integrates with popular software such as QuickBooks, Canva, Docusign, HubSpot, and PayPal.

“Small businesses account for 44% of U.S. GDP and employ nearly half the private-sector workforce, but their adoption of AI has lagged behind larger enterprises,” the company stated. “Tools and training are rarely tailored to the ways small businesses operate, and as a result, their use often stops at the chat window.”

Competitive Landscape

The move indicates that AI platform wars are expanding downmarket, focusing on the 36 million small businesses that form the backbone of the U.S. economy. Anthropic is trailing its competitor, OpenAI, which launched Enterprise ChatGPT in 2023, including a feature for smaller teams called ChatGPT Business.

Promotional Tour Across the U.S.

To promote its new features, Anthropic plans a coast-to-coast tour starting in Chicago, visiting 10 cities in total. At each stop, the company will offer a free AI training workshop for 100 local small business leaders.
