Juliette Binoche, Andrea Bescond, and other French celebrities are supporting a grassroots movement for a comprehensive law against gender-based violence after the murder of 11-year-old Lyhanna.

Background on the Movement

The movement gained momentum following Lyhanna's abduction and murder in late May. Jérôme Barella, charged with abduction and false imprisonment, was previously flagged to authorities for his relationship with a 17-year-old and in connection with two rape cases, according to Le Monde. The lack of action on these warnings has spurred calls for legal reform.

Recent Protests and Public Response

Protests have been held over two Mondays, with over 60,000 people demonstrating across France on June 8, per the Interior Ministry. In Paris, more than 1,000 gathered outside the Ministry of Justice on June 15. Organizers plan to hold weekly protests and a large march in Paris on July 4.

In Paris, numerous celebrities, including Bescond, Anna Mouglalis, and Judith Godrèche, joined the demonstrations. Social media hashtags like #JeSuisLyhanna have been used by Binoche and others to amplify the cause.

Legislative Proposals and Social Media Advocacy

Bescond, known for her activism through the film “Little Tickles,” has criticized French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin’s call for life sentences for offenders, advocating instead for systemic changes. The proposed “loi intégrale” aims to address gender-based violence comprehensively, with reforms in the justice system, police training, protection for child victims, and measures against cyberviolence.

Future Plans for the Movement

A draft bill was introduced to the National Assembly in December 2025 but has awaited further examination. Meanwhile, the #JeSuisLyhanna movement plans a nationwide strike on September 7, urging victims and supporters to participate in peaceful demonstrations.
