The 1,200-member crew of The Rip received a performance bonus from Netflix, as announced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's Artists Equity.
The Deal Behind the Bonus
Artists Equity, backed by Affleck and Damon, secured a deal with Netflix that ties bonuses to viewership milestones, a rare move for the streaming giant which usually only pays upfront fees. This initiative aligns with Artists Equity's philosophy that filmmakers should benefit from the value they contribute. Affleck and Damon stated, "We built Artists Equity on the belief that filmmakers should share in the value they bring to a project."
Success of 'The Rip'
Directed by Joe Carnahan, the crime drama premiered in January, drawing 41.6 million views within its first three days. Artists Equity launched in 2022 with funding from Gerry Cardinale's RedBird Capital Partners, advocating a model where everyone involved in a film shares in the profits.
Future Projects and Partnerships
Following The Rip, Artists Equity obtained a first-look deal with Netflix starting in March. Their upcoming project, Animals, directed by Affleck and featuring Steven Yeun, Kerry Washington, and Gillian Anderson, is slated for Netflix.
Affleck and Damon had disclosed their Netflix agreement for potential bonuses in January, emphasizing fairness and addressing pressing industry issues. Affleck remarked, "We wanted to institute fairness and address some of the real issues that are present and urgent for our business."
