Netflix has commenced production on 'Queenstown', its first original series commissioned in New Zealand, set in the luxurious ski resort town of the same name.
Setting the Scene
'Queenstown' is an eight-episode drama focusing on a wealthy family and their staff, exploring themes of power, loyalty, and desire. The series, described by Netflix as depicting “a wealthy family at war with itself,” is currently filming on location in Queenstown.
Behind the Scenes
The series is created and written by Chloe Stearns, known for 'Wolf Like Me' and 'The Falling Girls'. She also serves as an executive producer. Glendyn Ivin ('The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart') is the lead director and executive producer, with New Zealand filmmaker Roseanne Liang also directing.
Star-Studded Cast
The cast includes Emmy nominee Rufus Sewell ('The Diplomat'), Frances O’Connor ('Wednesday'), Alycia Debnam-Carey ('Godzilla x Kong: Supernova'), and New Zealand actor Te Kohe Tuhaka ('Chief of War').
Strategic Expansion
Amanda Duthie, Netflix’s content director for Australia and New Zealand, emphasized the significance of this project, stating, “Shooting our first locally-commissioned series here in New Zealand is a huge moment for us.”
Executive producers Jodi Matterson and Libbie Doherty praised Stearns as “an extraordinary new voice,” predicting the series will captivate audiences.
This project marks a strategic shift in Netflix’s original content strategy, which has previously focused on Australian productions like 'Heartbreak High'. With support from the New Zealand Film Commission and the country's Screen Production Rebate, 'Queenstown' represents a significant step in showcasing New Zealand as a homegrown content hub. The premiere date for the series has not yet been announced.
