Instagram's latest feature, Instants, launched globally on May 13, 2026, is facing backlash from users who accidentally share photos due to its automatic send feature.
Understanding Instants
Instants, a feature introduced by Instagram, allows users to share disappearing photos without a viewers list, where reactions and replies remain private. However, the feature defaults to sending images to all 'Friends', causing unintended shares.
Upon opening the Instants section via the mini photo stack in the inbox, users encounter an introductory screen. The camera interface then presents a shutter button with a toggle for 'Friends' and 'Close Friends', defaulting to the former.
Steps to Disable Instants
To disable Instants, navigate to your profile settings by clicking the three-line menu at the top right. In 'Content Preferences', toggle 'Hide Instants in Inbox' to stop seeing or receiving Instants.
For a temporary pause, hold and swipe right on the Instants pile in your inbox.
Retracting Sent Instants
After sending an Instant, an 'Undo' option appears beneath the shutter button, enabling quick retraction. Alternatively, users can access their archive via the four-box icon in the camera interface to delete unsent Instants for unopened recipients.
Meta's lack of detailed guidance on Instants has left users inadvertently sharing photos, sparking privacy concerns. The 'undo' feature, while available, is easily overlooked amid the confusion.
Meta's failure to clearly communicate the feature's mechanics has resulted in widespread user frustration, highlighting the importance of user control and privacy on platforms like Instagram.
