Guillermo del Toro has made it clear that artificial intelligence has no place in the 20th-anniversary 3D re-release of his acclaimed film, 'Pan's Labyrinth,' set for theaters on October 9.
Handcrafted Conversion
Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con, del Toro emphasized his decision to convert 'Pan's Labyrinth' into 3D by hand, rejecting AI technology. 'Obviously I said, ‘Absolutely no goddamn AI,’' he declared to audience applause. 'What we’re protecting is the beauty and the redeeming power of art. It’s not about who gets the job. We are protecting a lineage of art.'
Del Toro explained the conversion process, saying he had two choices: do it quickly or do it well. 'I chose good. You have to put in time. You have to do every element by hand. A human made a decision of depth,' he elaborated.
Documentary and Re-Release Details
During the panel, del Toro hinted at a documentary delving into the making of the original film, featuring appearances and commentary from Jacob Elordi, Cate Blanchett, and Charlie Day. The re-release will also be available in 2D HDR, with Cineverse and Fathom 4K handling the screenings, all overseen by del Toro. Tickets go on sale September 9.
Film's Legacy and Success
'Pan’s Labyrinth' follows Ofelia, played by Ivana Baquero, as she escapes the perils of 1944 Francoist Spain, venturing into a fantastical world. The film also stars Doug Jones, Maribel Verdú, and Sergi López. Upon its original release in 2006, 'Pan’s Labyrinth' grossed $83 million worldwide and won three Oscars for best makeup, cinematography, and art direction out of six nominations.
Cannes Reception
Earlier this year, del Toro premiered a 4K restoration of 'Pan’s Labyrinth' at the Cannes Film Festival, receiving several minutes of applause. Two decades ago, the film set a Cannes record for the longest standing ovation, lasting 22 minutes.
