The 'Rick and Morty' spinoff 'President Curtis' has been renewed for a second season by Adult Swim even before its series debut.
Comic-Con Announcement
At the San Diego Comic-Con panel on Friday, the team behind the upcoming series announced the renewal. Keith David leads the voice cast as President Andre Curtis. The first season will premiere on Sunday, following the 'Rick and Morty' season nine finale, with episodes streaming on HBO Max the next day.
Cast and Creators
David was joined on the panel by co-stars Stephanie Beatriz and Jim Rash, as well as co-creators and executive producers Dan Harmon and James Siciliano. 'President Curtis' is set in the 'Rick and Morty' universe, spotlighting the titular leader first introduced in the season two episode “Get Schwifty.”
Plot and Production
'President Curtis' follows the quirky staff of the free world's leader as they tackle crises ranging from interdimensional diplomacy to paranormal phenomena. The second season promises new threats and bizarre missions. Executive producers include Danielle Uhlarik, Monica Mitchell, and Steve Levy, alongside Harmon and Siciliano.
Reception and Future Plans
Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen stated, “President Curtis quickly proved himself worthy of another term!” praising Keith David's performance and the creative team. The flagship show, 'Rick and Morty', which debuted in 2013, has been renewed through season 12. Reports suggest supervising director Jacob Hair is in talks for an animated feature version with Warner Bros.
James Siciliano expressed hopes for 'President Curtis' to have a lasting run, stating, “Hopefully, we’ll go a long time.”
Critics have reacted positively. Daniel Fienberg of 'THR' noted the series “offers a reasonable amount of amusement” and mentioned that later episodes are “funnier, wilder and better focused than the opener.”
