Aaron Pierre captivated San Diego Comic-Con on Friday as DC Studios and HBO unveiled 'Lanterns,' featuring a new trailer showcasing Sinestro, played by Ulrich Thomsen, and the Manhunter threat.
Pierre's Role and On-set Challenges
Pierre leads as John Stewart, a young Green Lantern, while Kyle Chandler portrays Hal Jordan. The tension between them is palpable, with Stewart eager for the powerful ring and Jordan resistant to the idea of being replaced. Pierre, donning a Green Lantern-themed leather jacket, shared his dedication to the character, saying, “If I had the choice to choose any character in the DC Universe, I would still choose John Stewart.”
Despite a severe arm injury during casting, Pierre was determined to secure the role. “I did my final call back in my brace,” he recalled, expressing his admiration for John Stewart. “What would John do?” motivated him to push through, winning him the role.
Behind the Scenes and Filming
Less than 20% of 'Lanterns' was filmed on the Warner Bros. lot, with most shooting across California, creating a close-knit cast and crew. Pierre mentioned his camaraderie with the transport crew, often doing pushups with them. “You can feel the family, you can feel the unit…whatever happens, we poured our hearts into this,” he said.
Comic-Con Highlights
Guest star Nathan Fillion made a surprise appearance, entertaining the audience with a comedic bit about missing his panel invite. Fillion reprises his role as Guy Gardner, previously seen in 'Superman.'
'Lanterns,' co-created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, also features Garret Dillahunt and Poorna Jagannathan. The storyline follows two intergalactic cops embroiled in a cosmic mystery tied to a murder in the American heartland.
Upcoming Series Details
The series premieres on August 16 on HBO and includes stars Kelly Macdonald, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones. This follows DC Studios' recent successes with 'The Penguin' and 'Peacemaker' season two.
