Colossal Biosciences, a de-extinction startup known for its ambitious project to revive the dire wolf, is reportedly in talks to raise new capital at a valuation between $20 billion and $30 billion, Axios reported.
Revenue Generation and Partnerships
The five-year-old company has begun generating revenue over the past year, although details about the lead investor and the exact amount sought in the new funding round remain undisclosed. Colossal co-founder and CEO Ben Lamm previously outlined three potential revenue streams for the company, which include offering their conservation technology to governments like those of the U.S. and the UAE. Wired reported that the UAE recently invested $60 million in the company.
Spin-offs and Innovations
Colossal has spun out three startups: Breaking, which focuses on breaking down plastics; Form Bio, a computational biology platform that raised $30 million in funding; and Astromech, a predictive modeling company valued at $2 billion as of March. The company continues to explore new applications for its core technologies, recently adding the bluebuck antelope as a target species and partnering with the University of Tasmania through its nonprofit arm, the Colossal Foundation, to protect Tasmanian devils from a contagious cancer.
Future Technologies and Market Potential
Lamm mentioned plans to spin off its artificial animal womb technology, which could impact human fertility treatment. This technology is expected to be ready next year, as he told Rolling Stone in May. If successful in reintroducing extinct species like the woolly mammoth and the dodo bird to their native habitats, Colossal could generate revenue through biodiversity credits, akin to carbon credits.
Industry Context and Response
This fundraising effort aligns with a broader boom in deep-tech sectors such as longevity tech and alternative energy. Despite multiple inquiries, Colossal has not provided comments on the fundraising news.
