Dan Levy discussed the filming of a cocaine scene for Netflix's Big Mistakes during a special Netflix FYSEE event, sharing his determination to add authenticity to the scene.
Behind the Scenes of the Cocaine Scene
Levy, co-creator and star of Big Mistakes, described the experience of portraying a drug scene on screen. 'Doing lines and lines of cocaine was really fun,' Levy joked, emphasizing his intent to make the scene appear realistic. 'I have never done cocaine before, and actors doing bad drugs, looking like somebody who’s never done drugs before, is my worst nightmare as an actor,' he explained.
To achieve authenticity, Levy insisted on filming uninterrupted takes. 'I need you to get me doing the entire line, camera up. I want the audience to know that I actually downed this thing,' he told the camera crew.
Consultation with Crew
Before shooting, Levy humorously invited crew members with drug experience to offer feedback. 'If anyone has dabbled in drugs, I’m not going to say your name. You don’t have to out yourself to me,' he encouraged, asking for constructive criticism on his portrayal.
Several crew members shared advice, such as waiting for effects like 'glassy-eyed' expressions. Levy appreciated their input, praising them for their generosity.
Teasing Season Two
Levy also teased the upcoming second season of Big Mistakes. Currently in the scripting phase, he described it as 'bigger, bolder, sexier.' 'I’m halfway through season two. I know what half the season looks like, and I know how it ends,' he shared.
Levy expressed his commitment to crafting compelling storylines and dialogue, aiming to challenge and highlight the talents of the cast. 'It is my duty as a writer and an actor to serve this unbelievable cast,' he stated.
Big Mistakes, co-created by Levy and Rachel Sennott, follows siblings Nicky and Morgan, played by Levy and Taylor Ortega, as they navigate organized crime. The series features Abby Quinn, Boran Kuzum, Jack Innanen, Laurie Metcalf, Jacob Gutierrez, and Elizabeth Perkins. Season one is available on Netflix.
