The inaugural Gold Rush Pictures Berlinale Talents Lab Awards recognized filmmakers Marcel Beltrán, Subarna Dash, and Aliaksei Paluyan, selected from 18 submissions by a jury of industry experts.
Winners and Prizes
Each winner received a €5,000 grant, equivalent to $5,820, and support for attending the ongoing Cannes Film Festival. The awards are a collaboration between Gold Rush Pictures (GRP), an independent production company, and Berlinale Talents, the Berlin International Film Festival’s filmmaker development program.
Jury and Presentation
The awards were judged by a jury from GRP, including British screenwriter and director Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Austrian-German auteur and producer Feo Aladag, and German director and producer Tom Tykwer. The awards will be presented at the Berlinale Talents Rendezvous, an event for over 100 program alumni, hosted by ARTE and Berlinale Talents.
Partnership and Future Collaboration
GRP will become a co-partner of Berlinale Talents in 2027 and 2028, a first for an independent production company. Vladimir Zemtsov, founder of GRP, stated, “We partnered with Berlinale Talents because they are a vital engine for artistic discovery.” He praised the awardees, stating, “Marcel, Subarna, and Aliaksei are all exceptionally talented, each bringing a distinctive voice and projects brimming with potential.”
Jury's Statement and Project Descriptions
The jury noted that the awards celebrate projects where a distinctive artistic voice meets true urgency. From the diverse entries, three films were selected for their bold vision, emotional precision, and clear authorship.
- Vicissitudes of Light (director Marcel Beltrán): Described as a gripping archival documentary exploring the power of images and the fragility of authorship, it promises intellectual and emotional depth.
- Incubator (director Aliaksei Paluyan): A portrait of resilience, marked by political and economic challenges, it is anticipated to translate lived experiences into powerful cinema.
- In Heat, on Loop (director Subarna Dash): An exhilarating animated project, noted for its originality, emotional depth, and inventive visual language.
The awards underscore the dynamic synergy between GRP and Berlinale Talents, fostering new cinematic voices.
