Peter Jackson Awarded Palme d'Or at Cannes

At the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday night, Peter Jackson was honored with a Palme d'Or, presented by Elijah Wood, marking a 'Lord of the Rings' reunion.

The Reunion

Elijah Wood, known for his role as Frodo Baggins, shared memories of meeting Jackson at age 18 after submitting a VHS audition tape. "When I got the call to play Frodo, my life changed," Wood recalled.

Jackson's Acceptance

Embracing Wood, Jackson joked about his facial hair since their first meeting 27 years ago. He reflected on Cannes' role in saving 'The Lord of the Rings' during the tumultuous AOL-Time Warner merger. "The press was skeptical, questioning what would happen if the first film failed," Jackson said.

A Gamble Pays Off

Bob Shaye of New Line Cinema took a gamble by showing 20 minutes of 'The Fellowship of the Ring' at Cannes in 2001. Jackson credited this move with changing the film's perception. "Cannes created anticipation that wouldn't have existed otherwise," he stated.

Legacy and Future

Years later, the franchise thrives. Jackson produced 'The War of the Rohirrim' in 2024. Andy Serkis will direct 'Hunt for Gollum' in 2027, while Stephen Colbert and his son Peter are developing 'Shadows of the Past.'

Jackson is now part of an elite group of Cannes honorary Palme recipients, alongside Agnès Varda, Marco Bellocchio, Jodie Foster, and others. The 2026 Cannes Film Festival continues through May 23.
