Renowned filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev, once critically debilitated by long Covid, will present his latest film, Minotaur, at the Cannes Film Festival, marking a significant comeback since his 2017 feature Loveless.
From Acclaim to Adversity
In the 2010s, Zvyagintsev solidified his status as one of the preeminent directors of his era with films like The Return, Elena, Leviathan, and Loveless, the latter two earning Oscar nominations for Best International Feature. Known for his unflinching portrayals of Russian society, Zvyagintsev's career momentum was abruptly halted by the Covid pandemic.
The director suffered severe lung damage from Covid, leaving him immobile for a year and bedridden for 18 months. Describing his recovery as a 'miracle,' he stated, "I was resurrected in Paris." This experience led him to reevaluate his projects and priorities.
Inspiration Amidst Conflict
Zvyagintsev's latest work, Minotaur, is a reinterpretation of Claude Chabrol's 1969 film The Unfaithful Wife. Co-written with Simon Lyashenko, the project, which had been in development since before Covid, gained new urgency after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Zvyagintsev explained, "The timing was right, as I was able to blend my interest in the material with a new chapter in Russian history." The film's setting in 2022 amidst Russia's mobilization adds a layer of contemporary relevance.
Filming in New Territories
Unlike his previous projects shot in Russia, Minotaur was filmed in Latvia. The director noted that Latvia, with its significant Russian-speaking population and Soviet-era landscapes, offered an ideal backdrop. "Many areas are indistinguishable from Moscow’s outskirts," he remarked, adding that filming in Russia currently was not feasible.
Artistic Evolution Post-Recovery
The harrowing experience of long Covid has deeply influenced Zvyagintsev. "I realized the importance of seizing the moment," he said, emphasizing a newfound urgency in his work. Reflecting on his illness, he stated, "You can't leave things for tomorrow. Important decisions must be made quickly." This shift in perspective is evident in his determination to complete Minotaur.
Minotaur will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19, marking a significant milestone in Zvyagintsev's illustrious career and his defiance against the odds.
