Google's Android Show: Key Announcements Today

Google kicks off its announcements with the Android Show: I/O Edition today, May 12th, at 10AM PT / 1PM ET, streaming live on YouTube and the Android website.

Android 17 Unveiling

The focal point of today's show is expected to be Android 17, which may introduce design enhancements. A teaser video showing the Android robot with a translucent look sparked speculation about a Liquid Glass design, akin to iOS 26. However, Android ecosystem president Sameer Samat dismissed this, stating, “Not happening!”

Beta versions of Android 17 feature “app bubbles” for multitasking and improved location controls, including one-time sharing and indicators for app access.

Gemini Updates Expected

Updates to Google Gemini may also be highlighted, especially features integrated into Android. Recent app redesigns showcase a new prompt box with streamlined buttons and subtle color accents, reminiscent of the teaser's robot.

Potential Aluminium OS Reveal

A first look at Aluminium OS, Google's Android for PCs, might be revealed today. Previously leaked in a bug report, its UI merges Android and ChromeOS elements. Although a 2026 launch is hoped for, court documents suggest a full release might not occur until 2028, particularly for enterprise and education sectors. Compatibility with older Chromebooks remains uncertain.

Android XR Possibilities

Last year's show ended with a teaser for Android XR. This year, further announcements could involve smart glasses, though they might be reserved for the main I/O keynote.

Stay tuned for all the major updates from the Android Show: I/O Edition as Google sets the stage for its future developments.
