The Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris opens a new exhibition tomorrow, presenting a fusion of Thai royal dress and Parisian couture, featuring the wardrobe of the late Queen Sirikit of Thailand.
Historical Ties and Cultural Exchange
‘La Mode en Majesté: Royal Thai Dress from Tradition to Modernity’ marks the 170th anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation between France and Thailand. The exhibition highlights the deep historical ties dating back to 1686, when King Louis XIV welcomed Siamese ambassadors, sparking an interest in Siamese fashion at the French court.
Queen Sirikit's Diplomatic Fashion
Queen Sirikit, who became queen at 17, was known for her diplomatic use of fashion. Compared to Jacqueline Kennedy, she used her attire to promote Thai culture globally. Her collaborations with Pierre Balmain and the house of Lesage resulted in a unique cross-cultural style.
The exhibition, a joint effort with the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles and the Sustainable Arts and Crafts Institute of Thailand, features nearly 200 pieces, including Balmain’s adaptations of Thai silk brocade and gold thread embroidery.
Legacy and Future Generations
Her granddaughter, HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, continues this legacy. A fashion graduate from the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, she designs her own brand, Sirivannavari, and plans a Paris runway debut.
The Princess, speaking to Vogue, emphasized the importance of Thai craftsmanship and how her grandmother's work still inspires modern Thai fashion. Queen Sirikit’s ‘Eight Styles of Thai Dress’ set a new standard for formal attire, similar to the Japanese kimono or Indian sari.
Fashion as Cultural Heritage
HRH Princess Sirivannavari highlighted the Queen's dedication to supporting local artisans through the SUPPORT Foundation, which promotes Thai textiles and natural dyes in everyday fashion. She believes craftsmanship holds the future of fashion, offering something AI cannot replicate.
The Princess’s Instagram following of over 386,000 reflects her influence as a cultural ambassador. Her brand embraces traditional Thai textiles and modern designs, showcasing a fusion of cultures on an international stage.
Reflecting on the exhibition, the Princess feels her grandmother's presence and guidance. Queen Sirikit’s heritage continues to be celebrated globally, as her innovative style leaves a lasting impact on fashion.
