Tadka, the microdrama platform on JioHotstar, has surpassed 100 million users, highlighting short-form content's mainstream success in India.
Rapid Growth in Engagement
Since its launch, Tadka has seen daily watch time per viewer increase fivefold. Over 42% of the platform's audience is under 24, and metro and Tier 2 city viewers each contribute nearly 40% of its total watch time. This data suggests a growing preference for premium, mobile-first storytelling that aligns with everyday entertainment habits.
Industry Reflections
Ambuj Kashyap, executive VP for micro content at JioStar, stated, “Crossing 100 million users is not just a milestone for Tadka; it represents a larger inflection point in the evolution of streaming.” Kashyap emphasized that consumer behavior is shifting away from traditional viewing formats, creating new storytelling opportunities. He added, “The scale and engagement we have seen reinforce our belief that this format can unlock new creative possibilities, new audiences, and new growth opportunities for the industry.”
Expanding Production Horizons
The milestone is influencing content production locations. With rising demand for microdramas, shoots are taking place beyond traditional hubs, expanding to cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Lucknow, Indore, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai. This shift is broadening the range of voices in Indian content and spreading production activity across the country.
A Diverse Slate of Microdramas
Tadka, launched with over 100 original titles, features vertical, episodic stories between 30 to 60 seconds long, tailored for mobile consumption. The narratives focus on everyday emotions, relationships, and contemporary Indian culture, spanning genres like romance, drama, thrillers, comedy, sports, and youth-led stories in multiple languages including Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
Part of JioHotstar's broader strategy, Tadka aligns with evolving consumer behavior, alongside interactive commerce and second-screen experiences. JioHotstar caters to more than 500 million monthly users and offers a library of over 300,000 hours of programming across 19 languages.
