Amazon Revives Tomb Raider with New Games and Series

Amazon is set to expand the Tomb Raider universe with the launch of new video games and a live-action TV series, following its success with the '007 First Light' game.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis

The first release, 'Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis,' is a remake of the 1996 classic, scheduled for February 2027. This game will be followed by 'Tomb Raider: Catalyst' later in the year. Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics provided a preview of 'Atlantis' at the Summer Game Fest, but details on 'Catalyst' remain scarce.

Alix Wilton Regan as Lara Croft

Alix Wilton Regan, known for 'Cyberpunk 2077,' will voice and perform as Lara Croft in both games. Regan described the experience as mind-blowing and anticipates that players will feel the same. She expressed excitement about the new direction, saying, “I am excited for people to go on a really, really big new adventure with Lara.”

The plot of 'Catalyst' involves Lara's journey in Northern India after a mythical cataclysm. The game centers on uncovering ancient secrets and battling treasure hunters.

Double Duty for Regan

Regan was cast in 2022 and began production on both games by 2024. She was initially unaware that she would be involved in two projects. “I didn’t know immediately, but certainly for about two years now, I’ve been working on both projects simultaneously,” she said.

Amazon is also developing a new Tomb Raider series starring Sophie Turner. Regan praised the series, stating it's “going to be fantastic.”

Two Approaches to Lara Croft

Regan noted differences in her portrayal of Lara in the two games. She aimed to present a younger, more innocent Lara in 'Atlantis' compared to the more experienced version in 'Catalyst.' Inspiration was drawn from previous games and films, aiming to capture classic Lara's wit and intelligence.

Regan and Turner, who know each other socially, discussed their roles. Regan recounted how she managed to keep her casting a secret until it was announced, later communicating with Turner about their shared role.

Regan has not delved into Turner's approach but trusts in the series' creative team, including writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge. She emphasized the immersive nature of games compared to TV, aiming to keep Lara grounded and charismatic for players.

Feedback from the 'Atlantis' demo has been positive, highlighting its fun factor. Regan hopes both longtime and new fans will find the games immersive and exciting.
