Sennheiser has launched its Momentum 5 Wireless headphones, incorporating upgraded active noise cancellation (ANC) and a replaceable battery, available from June 30th for $399.99, a $50 increase from the previous model, the Momentum 4.
Enhancements Under the Hood
While the design of the Momentum 5 closely resembles its predecessor with large ear cups, the improvements are significant. The headphones maintain the 42mm drivers used in the Momentum 3 and 4 models but add Hi-Res Audio certification and expand their Bluetooth codec support to include AptX Lossless. This addition allows streaming of 16-bit/44.1kHz CD-quality sound from compatible devices, specifically those with a Qualcomm processor supporting the Snapdragon Sound platform. Compatible smartphones include models from Sony and Motorola, while those from Samsung, Google, and Apple are not supported.
Advanced Noise Cancellation
The Momentum 5 headphones feature four microphones on each side, doubling from the previous model, enhancing their noise-cancelling capabilities. Sennheiser claims the latest headphones are up to three times more effective at reducing ambient noise, including voice chatter and airplane cabin noise. This advancement also improves call quality, ensuring clear vocal transmission and reception.
Battery and Additional Features
Battery life stands at 57 hours, slightly below the Momentum 4's 60 hours but nearly double that of Sony's WH-1000XM6, which lasts up to 30 hours with ANC. Additional upgrades include a 20 percent smaller carrying case, support for Dolby Atmos and spatial audio with head tracking, and potential future upgrades from Bluetooth 5.4 to Bluetooth 6.0 via firmware update, though Sennheiser has not specified a timeline.
