Tarantino Critiques Post-Pandemic Hollywood Films

Quentin Tarantino has expressed strong criticism towards recent Hollywood films, claiming they are plagued by flaws and miscasting, labeling them as products of a 'flavorless sausage factory.'

Tarantino's Critical Viewpoint

In an op-ed for Sight and Sound magazine, the acclaimed director noted a decline in film quality since the pandemic, stating, 'Since the pandemic, for me anyway, it seems almost impossible for a new movie to come out that I don’t pick to death.' He criticized various aspects such as implausibilities, audience-pandering, and miscast performers.

“Flaws, implausibilities, audience pandering, miscast performers or just plain stupid shit usually torpedoes every new movie coming out of the flavorless sausage factory that used to call itself Hollywood,” Tarantino wrote.

Notable Exceptions

Despite his overall disappointment, Tarantino acknowledged a few films he enjoyed post-pandemic, including West Side Story (2021) and Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 & 2 (2024). However, none captivated him as much as Joe Carnahan’s The Rip, featuring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

“The film is an exciting cop thriller with a novel premise that manages to deliver the goods in really clever ways,” Tarantino stated, highlighting the screenplay by Carnahan and Michael McGrale as a standout element.

The Impact of 'The Rip'

The Rip has drawn attention, not just for its content but due to a defamation lawsuit against Damon and Affleck’s production company by two Miami-Dade police officers. They allege the film blends fictionalized details with their real-life experiences, causing reputational damage.

Future Endeavors

Beyond his critiques, Tarantino is also channeling his creative efforts into a stage play. He is working on The Popinjay Cavalier, set to premiere in London’s West End in 2027, described as “a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen.”
