Patton Oswalt, the voice of Remy in the 2007 Pixar hit Ratatouille, is hopeful for a sequel but insists it should be driven by director Brad Bird's creative vision.
Pixar's Current Sequel Slate
While Pixar returns to theaters this month with Toy Story 5, the studio is developing new installments for Incredibles 3, Monsters Inc. 3, and Coco 2. Despite the success of Ratatouille, which earned $623 million globally and remains a classic, a sequel has not yet been announced.
Oswalt's Thoughts on a Sequel
Oswalt shared on The Daily Beast's Obsessed podcast, “Obviously, I’d love if there was a Ratatouille sequel,” but emphasized that any continuation depends on Bird's inspiration. “There was never gonna be an Incredibles sequel until he thought, ‘Wait a minute. There is a story to tell,’” Oswalt noted.
He expressed a desire for a sequel with the same transformative energy seen in successful follow-ups like Terminator 2 or Aliens. Oswalt wants a story that feels necessary rather than “just a money grab.”
Bird's Award-Winning Legacy
Bird directed Ratatouille following The Incredibles, with both films securing Oscars for Best Animated Feature. Ratatouille also received nominations in categories like Original Score and Sound Editing.
When considering a sequel, Oswalt said he prefers ideas that naturally evolve, avoiding the forced development seen in some movie franchises. “I don’t want it to come from us going, ‘All right, let’s get out the legal pads and let’s break down a sequel,’” he added.
For Oswalt and fans of the original film, any new Ratatouille project must offer fresh dimensions to the beloved story of Remy and his culinary dreams.
