Parallel Tales: Star-Studded Yet Directionless

Asghar Farhadi's Parallel Tales, featuring Isabelle Huppert and Virginie Efira, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival but struggles under its own weight, despite a promising premise.

Star-Studded Cast

The film's ensemble includes Vincent Cassel, Pierre Niney, Adam Bessa, India Hair, and Catherine Deneuve. Despite the impressive lineup, the movie fails to deliver a cohesive narrative, with its 2 hours 20 minutes running time feeling sluggish.

Inspiration and Execution

Farhadi, alongside co-writer Saeed Farhadi, bases the script on Krzysztof Kieślowski's Dekalog, specifically the sixth episode. However, the film only retains the setup and the evocative score by Zbigniew Preisner, which fails to inject life into the underwhelming narrative.

Plot and Character Dynamics

The film follows novelist Sylvie (Huppert), drawing inspiration for her book by watching a woman named Anna (Efira) through a telescope. Unfortunately, the film's multiple subplots dilute the characters, limiting their depth and engagement.

Sound plays a significant role, with Anna working as a foley artist. Yet, the romantic triangle involving characters played by Niney and Cassel lacks the impact needed to sustain interest.

Missed Opportunities

Despite its polished visuals and strong performances, especially from Efira, Parallel Tales fails to weave its narrative threads into a satisfying whole. The film is over-complicated, with a story that never quite comes together.

While plans are in motion for more Dekalog adaptations, improvements are necessary if future projects are to succeed.
