Directors from Netflix's top series of the year discussed their storytelling techniques and creative processes at a Variety event in partnership with Netflix.
Creative Process and Inspirations
Antonio Campos, director of “The Beast In Me,” Max Winkler of “Monster: The Ed Gein Story,” and Alexandria Stapleton, director of “Sean Combs: The Reckoning,” shared insights at the event. Campos described his series as a “contemporary noir,” emphasizing the importance of dynamic editing and rhythm. He and cinematographer Lyle Vincent drew inspiration from 1970s paranoia thrillers by filmmakers like Gordon Willis and the film “Michael Clayton.”
Winkler, influenced by Truman Capote's “In Cold Blood,” aimed to depict the stillness of the plains and highlight Gein’s character's smallness. Stapleton discussed the challenges of documenting Sean “Diddy” Combs’ evolving story amid ongoing grand jury trials, stressing the need to look beyond scandalous details to understand the broader context and timeline.
Challenges in Production
Winkler elaborated on the extensive research and interviews conducted, using recordings of Gein to shape Charlie Hunnam’s performance. Campos was deeply involved in production aspects like color grading and sound mixing. Stapleton faced uncertainties due to the trial's unpredictable outcome, necessitating new footage and juror interviews for the final episodes.
Insights from the Duffer Brothers and Marc Munden
The Duffer Brothers and Marc Munden also spoke at the event, with Ross Duffer reflecting on the decade-long journey of creating “Stranger Things.” He noted, “Every year we were learning something new, trying something new.” Matt Duffer described concluding the series as emotionally charged, aiming to recapture the essence of the first season.
Munden emphasized fidelity to the “Lord of the Flies” source material, focusing on deeper character exploration and period authenticity. His adaptation highlights the 1950s Cold War era. Munden discussed shooting in challenging conditions in Malaysia, resorting to creative solutions like filming day for night to navigate monsoons and wildlife.
Working with Young Actors
The directors highlighted the joys and challenges of working with young actors. Ross Duffer said they sought authenticity in casting, which led to roles being adjusted to accommodate the actors' personalities, enhancing the characters' depth.
All directors expressed the emotional impact of filming the final episodes and the fulfillment of realizing their creative visions.
