Cate Blanchett's production company, Dirty Films, has joined the documentary adaptation of Dana Thomas’ book, Fashionopolis: The Price of Fast Fashion and the Future of Clothes, directed by Reiner Holzemer.
Exploring Global Fashion
The documentary, moving into the financing phase, will explore the $3 trillion global fashion industry. It will examine the environmental and human costs of an industry built on speed and scale, while highlighting designers and innovators who are reshaping the system. The film draws from Thomas’s book, praised by The Independent as the best fashion book on sustainability, and described by The New Yorker as providing insights into reconciling consumerism with sustainability.
Voices of Change
Fashionopolis will feature insights from designers, policymakers, labor activists, and innovators leading systemic change in fashion. Blanchett, known for her advocacy of sustainability, and Holzemer, who has directed numerous fashion documentaries, aim to present a transformative narrative. Holzemer’s previous works include Martin Margiela: In His Own Words and Dries, focusing on renowned Belgian designer Dries Van Noten, among others.
Thomas and Cosgrave's Contributions
Dana Thomas, a prominent fashion writer and sustainability advocate, is writing and producing the documentary with Bronwyn Cosgrave. Cosgrave’s credits include co-producing The Super Models on Apple TV and producing other industry-related projects. The documentary aims to portray stories that inspire dialogue and hope, according to Holzemer. Thomas emphasizes meeting designers, activists, and innovators working within the industry to effect change.
Dirty Films' Diverse Portfolio
Dirty Films, co-founded by Blanchett, is known for its diverse productions across TV and film, including the award-winning podcast Climate of Change. Their portfolio includes Mrs. America, Stateless, Truth, Carol, Little Fish, Apples, and The Turning.
The documentary aims to offer a lens into the possibilities of transforming fashion into a more responsible and beautiful future.
