Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb, plans to establish a new AI lab, confirmed by a source to TechCrunch. This announcement aligns Chesky with several Silicon Valley leaders dissatisfied with current AI models.
Airbnb's AI Strategy
Though Airbnb has integrated AI coding tools, Chesky expressed last year that the company hasn't partnered with large language models (LLMs) due to their premature state. His understanding of AI is informed by his long-standing relationship with Sam Altman of OpenAI, dating back to 2006 through Y Combinator.
Chesky's Relationship with OpenAI
Chesky's connection with Altman deepened as OpenAI expanded. He advised Altman on managing rapid tech growth and reportedly played a role in Altman's return to OpenAI after an executive dispute. Despite these ties, Chesky's new venture may position him as a competitor to OpenAI.
AI Lab Focus and Leadership
The specific focus of Chesky's AI lab remains undisclosed, but Bloomberg notes an emphasis on user interaction and design, paralleling efforts by Brett Adcock's Hark AI lab. Chesky will not step into a founder role for this lab; he remains CEO of Airbnb while a yet-to-be-named leader will manage the lab.
Airbnb and Chesky representatives have not commented on this development.
