Milena Smit continues to rise in cinema, thanks to her collaboration with renowned director Pedro Almodóvar. At his house, Almodóvar informed Smit that he had written a character specifically for her in his new film.
From Modeling to Acting
Smit's entry into the film industry was serendipitous. While modeling in Madrid, she was discovered on Instagram by the casting team for David Victori's 2020 thriller Cross the Line, leading to her role alongside Mario Casas. Her performance caught the attention of Almodóvar, who cast her as a co-lead in 2021's Oscar-nominated Parallel Mothers with Penélope Cruz.
Almodóvar's Influence
Reflecting on her relationship with the director, Smit shared, “Pedro has this tenderness. He’s so kind.” Her experience working on Parallel Mothers was overwhelming but rewarding. Now a Goya Award nominee, Smit remains grateful for Almodóvar's mentorship.
Starring in 'Bitter Christmas'
In Almodóvar’s 24th feature film Amarga Navidad (Bitter Christmas), Smit plays Natalia, a character dealing with the loss of her young son. The film features Elsa, played by Bárbara Lennie, and Raúl, portrayed by Leonardo Sbaraglia. Smit describes her character's pain as internalized and profound.
“She’s so, so, so in pain,” Smit said of Natalia. A key scene involves Natalia witnessing a child at dinner, bringing her grief to the forefront.
Upcoming Projects
Smit's career continues to evolve. She is set to star in Spanish Western Trinidad alongside Gabriela Andrada and Karla Sofía Gascón. She also expressed admiration for Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet, among recent releases she would have loved to be involved in.
Despite her success, Smit remains loyal to Almodóvar, the first director to create a role for her. The prospect of attending the Cannes Film Festival together fills her with excitement and gratitude. “I’ve learned so much,” she remarked, embracing her journey with the acclaimed director.
